June 14 - July 10, 2007 Special reception with Li Tianyuan & Feng Boyi: June 28, 2007 6:30 - 8:30 pm

ChinaSquare presents work by Li Tianyuan, an artist whose new work grapples with the contradictions between man and nature, the imaginative and the realistic, and connection and isolation. Identified as "Neo-Naturalism," Tianyuan's work has a feeling of the poetic, even the elegiac. His mysterious scenes draw the viewer in with their gentle colors and figures, but remain remote and charged with untold meaning. Tianyuan uses the Eastern tradition of naturalism to comment about the most profound moments of life for the individual and society as a whole.

The images in this exhibition tell a story of social and psychological change, moments of emotional insight and the movement between the past and the present. Tianyuan's work contains an element of strangeness and surrealism; his images are reticent about their own meaning. The inscrutability of his work keeps the viewer constantly engaged, each work is an enigma to be discovered and re-discovered.

Li Tianyuan is an accomplished artist. He studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the most prestigious art school in China, and has been awarded and recognized as one of the most important artists in contemporary Chinese art. Curator Feng Boyi's insight and sensitivity to Tianyuan's work creates an exhibition that expresses the complexity and depth of the artist's strengths. Among the many talents from China, Li Tianyuan stands out as an artist with a profoundly resonant voice.

DETOUR The Moleskine City Notebook Experience

For two centuries now Moleskine (mol-a-skeen'-a) has been the legendary notebook of artists, writers, intellectuals and travelers. From gifted artists Henri Matisse (1869–1954) and Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890), to poet and leader of the surrealist movement André Breton (1896-1966) to Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) considered the most influential writer of the last century, to famous travel writer Bruce Chatwin (1940-1989).

By using moleskine doesn't necessarily make you one of them, nevertheless it is a good notebook.

DETOUR: The Moleskine City Notebook Experience
June 1, 2007 - June 29, 2007
Art Directors Club Gallery (ADC)
106 W 29th St

To launch its new U.S. City Notebooks, Moleskine has given 70 blank books to some of the world's most creative artists, architects, film directors, graphic designers, illustrators, and writers connected to New York to fill up with their daily journeys and life experiences. These notebooks will be on display at the ADC Gallery, with a special preview on May 20, during the International Contemporary Furniture Fair. The project will support Lettera 27, a non-profit organization whose mission is to defend the right to literacy and education in the world's most deprived areas.

In conjunction with the project, Moleskinecity.com is a new blog dedicated to the city, its travelers, its residents, and independent and free-thinking people. There are blogs for each Moleskine City Notebook city, and each city blog features updates, curiosities, traveller experiences, and links to other blogs and communities. Please visit Moleskinecity.com to share your personal points of view, exchange information, discover your urban path, your interests, your itinerary, and become part of the U.S. DETOUR experience in New York
