ANTON BRUCKNER Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major
Two people are worth mentioning.
Acclaimed Conductor Franz Welser-Möst begins his fifth season as Music Director of The Cleveland Orchestra in September 2006. He has made a long-term commitment to the Orchestra that extends through the 2011-12 season. After making his American debut in 1989, Mr. Welser-Möst returned regularly to the United States, appearing with the orchestras of Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, and Saint Louis. In 1990, he was appointed Music Director of the London Philharmonic, a position he held until 1996. In September 2005 Mr. Welser-Möst became General Music Director of the Zurich Opera, where he has served as Principal Conductor since 2002, and previously served as Music Director since 1995. He was presented the 2003 Conductor of the Year Award by Musical America.
Another legnedary person is Thomas Quasthoff.
Bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff begins his season-long Perspectives series with the Opening Night Gala concert on October 4. Mr. Quasthoff appears throughout the US and Europe both in recital and with orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Vienna Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, and London Symphony Orchestra. An exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, Mr. Quasthoff's recent releases include two Schubert masterpieces: Die schöne Müllerin and a DVD performance of Winterreise with Daniel Barenboim.
