2006 China IT Summit

I will be helping out at this 2006 China IT Summit. They will have Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Prize Laureater, to give a special talk. I just bought Joseph Stiglitz's new book "Making Globalization Work". Seems like another wonderful book after the "Globalization and Its Discontents" in 2002.

What on Mars is happening?

I was reading some technical book today and encountered this interesting anecdote.
The Mars Pathfinder landed on Martian surface July 4 1997, followed by expeditions by Sojourner rover. But it soon experienced several software resets. Each reset delayed the work by one day. And the scientists from JPL had to debug and patch the system remotely from Earth!
Here is a nice powerpoint from Harvard University by Matt Welsh nicely describes the dramatic incident.
Lessons:
● Automatically reset system to “known good” state if things run amuck (Far better than hanging or crashing)
● Ability to trace execution of complex multithreaded code is useful (provide debug mode)
● Think through all possible thread interactions carefully!!
The complete story can be find at Microsoft website.

Rue 57 and Yang's visit

Just realized that "Rue" means "Road" in French. And the restaurant Rue 57 is right on 57th Street. It is connected to Tao, which is also in the neighborhood. Both restaurants offer fantastic French Asian fusion food.

ANTON BRUCKNER Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major

Two people are worth mentioning.

Acclaimed Conductor Franz Welser-Möst begins his fifth season as Music Director of The Cleveland Orchestra in September 2006. He has made a long-term commitment to the Orchestra that extends through the 2011-12 season. After making his American debut in 1989, Mr. Welser-Möst returned regularly to the United States, appearing with the orchestras of Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, and Saint Louis. In 1990, he was appointed Music Director of the London Philharmonic, a position he held until 1996. In September 2005 Mr. Welser-Möst became General Music Director of the Zurich Opera, where he has served as Principal Conductor since 2002, and previously served as Music Director since 1995. He was presented the 2003 Conductor of the Year Award by Musical America.

Another legnedary person is Thomas Quasthoff.
Bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff begins his season-long Perspectives series with the Opening Night Gala concert on October 4. Mr. Quasthoff appears throughout the US and Europe both in recital and with orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Vienna Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, and London Symphony Orchestra. An exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, Mr. Quasthoff's recent releases include two Schubert masterpieces: Die schöne Müllerin and a DVD performance of Winterreise with Daniel Barenboim.

Belly Dancing at Tuts

Tuts, an Egypt Theme club located at lower east side of Manhattan. I visited it several months ago. Back then, it was just starting and had nothing just the basic Hookah. Now it is completely different, the drink menu is updated, the Hors d’ Oeuvres is tasty. And they now have a hot belly dancer.

New York Film Festival

Robin Holland, originally uploaded by willowyangcn.

The 44th New York Film Festival, Sept 29 - Oct 15, 2006, at Film Society of Lincoln Center.
They have Robin Holland's photos on display. He photographed a large school of directors and actors, including Wong Kar Wai, few I can identify from either name or picture. Wonderful pictures. But it seems that I am the only person visit the Walter Reade Theater just for the pictures, usually people just walk by the pictures, when they are waiting in line to get in the next movie.
Although I have learned this event before, I wasn't really pay much attention to the specific agenda. Until recently, I developed a special interest in a panorama camera Widelux F8, which Jeff Bridges used for "behind the scene" documentary. I paid a visit to his all messed up website, and find the 2004 poster was from him, and I assumed the wonderful picture was made by his Widelux, as usual.
The first time I got interested in Jeff Bridges' work is when I watched the DVD Seabiscuit. The extra feature in the DVD is Jeff's pictures, amazing pictures. The filmography from the movie itself is very beautiful, but I seems more attracted to the documentary.

Clare's revisit to New York after she hopped from one Island (Manhattan) to another (Hong Kong). But she is still working for the Mayor of NYC. We were sitting in a very French bar, with all French posters and some cigar boxes piled up at the corner.
I didn't have much experience on east village, not as much as the west village. The people here are younger, full of dream, and strive for a brightful future lovelily. The typical looking is a guy around 20, with fluffy red hair, walking fast across the street, carrying a suitcase stuck with all kinds of stamps, pictures, and two drum sticks on the other hand.

Sijin and Clare were passionately talking about Wang Xiaobo and Yu Hua, famous Chinese writers. Sijin shared with us her experience in one of Yu Hua's talk at Harvard. "It is all about details", "Details will build special connection between the reader and the book." I nodded agree.
